| Report | Four Free Outing Club adventurers, topping off the mastery gained from a year of climbing with the club, celebrated an ascent of the famed Trap Dyke alpine route up Mt Colden in the Adirondacks. We hiked to Lake Colden as a base camp on Saturday and did a variety of independent hikes, then departed Sunday morning for Avalanche Lake and our core goal. The Trap Dyke had some water flow but most of the technical sections were dry. 1000 feet of third and fourth (and a few moves of easy fifth class this year) got us above the steep sections. Our traverse onto the face of Colden was somewhat higher than usual, so a traverse through an overgrowth of undergrowth took some time. The slab climb to the summit had some breaks for lunch and opportunities to enjoy the stupendous views. Tired but still exhilarated, we got back to Ithaca late. Andy has a great writeup of the climb on his blog: http://www.borealnemeton.org/outdoors/climbing-the-trap-dike |
